The school also operates the Centre for Fashion Diversity & Social Change, which explores fashion’s power to lead social change. Ryerson’s Fashion Zone is an incubator for fashion-inspired start-ups. It utilises state-of-the-art design software, illustration tablets, laser cutting, 3D printing and digital fabric printing. The four-year Fashion Communications programme covers areas such as graphic and publication design, fashion photography and illustration, product development, event management and strategic communication. With an acceptance rate of just 17 percent, it is one of the most exclusive programmes on BoF’s list. It is often responsible for the overall tone and aesthetic of a work, and can involve everything from colour and lighting choices to camera angles and shot selection. The Undergraduate in Fashion Art Direction is a leading creative program, translating a concept into all possible languages from textual to audiovisual and shaping Art Directors, Graphic Designers, New Media Experts, Fashion Editors and Fashion Curators who are ready to tackle international multimedia, advertising agencies and creative studios. Ryerson University School of Fashion is Canada’s longest running university fashion programme and the only Canadian university to offer both undergraduate and graduate fashion programmes as full degrees. Art Direction is the planning and vision for a creative project, including the overall look, feel and style. LCF has produced alumna such as Emma Shepley, who launched a virtual reality changing room at Westfield, Stratford City. Students participate in fashion-tech hackathons and digital labs. LCF’s Art Direction and Communications programmes specialise in cultural, historical and theoretical studies, and incorporating virtual reality and artificial intelligence tools in computer-aided design practices.
